What Is This Quota?
G.O. (Ms) No. 167 HE (J2) dated 08.11.2020 — Tamil Nadu reserved 7.5% of total TNEA engineering seats for students who studied from Class 6 to Class 12 in Tamil Nadu Government Schools.
This was enacted into law as Tamil Nadu Act No. 22 of 2021, making it a permanent statutory reservation.
Eligibility — The Core Rule
Student must have studied ALL of Classes 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 in a Tamil Nadu Government School.
Eligible School Types — All 7 Categories (2026 Brochure)
The 2026 brochure formally recognises seven categories of TN State Government schools as eligible for the 7.5% reservation:
| # | School Type |
|---|---|
| 1 | Government Schools |
| 2 | Corporation Schools |
| 3 | Municipal Schools |
| 4 | Adi Dravidar & Tribal Welfare Schools |
| 5 | Kallar Reclamation Schools |

All seven are TN State Government schools. KV / Navodaya / Government-aided / CBSE government / Matriculation schools — even if they receive government grants — do NOT qualify for 7.5%. Pre-2026 HSC pass-outs applying under 7.5% must produce a Bonafide Certificate from the school (in addition to the Class 6–12 study certificate).
