25 Critical Mistakes Students Make
Registration & Eligibility Mistakes
-
Submitting a Tahsildar-issued certificate for BC/MBC reservation. RDO-level or higher is mandatory for BC/BCM/MBC reservation claims. Tahsildar certificates get rejected.
-
Assuming only Class 12 marks matter. The TNEA score uses Physics, Chemistry, AND Maths. Many students neglect Physics and Chemistry, not realising they contribute 50 marks each.
-
Thinking Maths and Physics have equal weight. Maths = 100 marks; Physics = 50 marks; Chemistry = 50 marks. Maths is worth double.
-
Registering as OC when you qualify for BC/MBC. Once registered, category cannot be changed. Always register in your correct community to access reservation benefits.
-
Not registering for 7.5% quota even though eligible. Students who studied in TN Government schools sometimes forget to opt for the 7.5% quota during registration.
-
Uploading low-resolution / incorrect documents. All uploaded documents must be clearly legible PDFs or JPEGs. Blurry uploads → rejection → missed counselling.
Choice Filling Mistakes
-
Filling only 3–5 choices. Experts recommend 50+ choices. Fewer choices = higher chance of "no allotment."
-
Not locking choices before the deadline. Unlocked choices are auto-locked — but manual locking is strongly recommended to ensure your order is saved correctly.
-
Prioritising college brand over branch fit. A weaker branch at a top college may have worse placement outcomes than a strong branch at a mid-tier college.
-
Not including government colleges as choices. Government colleges have lower fees, often strong placements, and many students overlook them in favour of brand-name SF colleges.
-
Not understanding that Maths/branch suitability matters. CSE requires strong programming aptitude. Including 40 CSE choices and 0 ECE choices is risky if your rank is borderline.
Allotment & Confirmation Mistakes
-
Confusing ALLOTTED COMMUNITY: OC with a mistake. If you are SC/MBC and see "ALLOTTED COMMUNITY: OC" — this is NOT an error. It means you competed in open competition and WON a seat. Good outcome.
-
Missing the confirmation window deadline. No action = auto-cancellation = seat loss. This is non-reversible.
-
Choosing "Decline & Exit" by accident. This permanently removes you from TNEA counselling for that year. Choose carefully.
-
Not paying the TFC fee after choosing "Accept & Upward." Non-payment at TFC after choosing Upward is treated as default — your current allotment is cancelled.
-
Thinking "Decline & Continue" guarantees a seat in Round 2. It doesn't. Round 2 may not have the seat you want. You could end up with nothing.
Quota & Category Mistakes
-
Believing government-aided school students qualify for 7.5% quota. They do NOT. Only students from TN Government schools (not aided) for all of Classes 6–12 qualify.
-
Thinking CBSE students can get 7.5% quota if their school is a government school. The school must be a Tamil Nadu STATE Government school — CBSE-affiliated government schools generally don't qualify.
-
Assuming SC students have a creamy layer. SC, SCA, and ST have NO creamy layer. All SC students regardless of income qualify for SC reservation.
-
Thinking DNC has a separate seat pool. DNC candidates compete in the MBC pool. There is no separate DNC code or rank list.
-
Assuming all fees are waived for 7.5% quota students. Tuition, hostel, and development fees are waived. But examination fees and mess/food charges are not.
Process Mistakes
-
Not downloading the allotment order before visiting TFC. TFC requires a printed allotment order. No printout → cannot be processed.
-
Visiting a TFC outside the allotted date range. Each round has specific TFC visit dates. Visiting too early or too late means your allotment has lapsed.
-
Not checking document verification status after uploading. Uploaded documents go through a review. Check status regularly — rejection notices need quick action.
-
Submitting improvement exam marks expecting they'll be used. Improvement exam marks are NOT considered for TNEA candidates from 2006 onwards (G.O. No. 184 HE (J2) dt. 09.06.2005 + G.O. (st) 143 HE (J2) dt. 06.05.2008). Only first-attempt original marks are used for both eligibility and rank calculation. Don't waste time uploading the improvement mark sheet — it has no bearing on your TNEA outcome.
30 Most-Asked Student Questions
Q1. Is there an entrance exam for TNEA?
No. TNEA admission is based entirely on Class 12 marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. No JEE, TANCET, or any other test required for B.E./B.Tech.
Q2. Can a CBSE student apply for TNEA?
Yes. CBSE students are fully eligible. Their marks are normalised before ranking.
Q3. My community is "OC" — which pool do I compete in?
OC-origin candidates (Brahmins and communities not listed in BC/MBC/SC lists) compete in the Open Competition (31%) pool. They cannot claim any reservation.
Q4. I scored 189 in TNEA. What is my approximate rank?
Based on 2025 data: approximately rank 13,958 – 36,665. Use the Marks vs. Rank table on Page 3 for more precise ranges.
Q5. Can I change my choices after locking?
No. Once locked, choices cannot be modified. Lock only when you are 100% satisfied with the order.
Q6. What if I don't get an allotment in Round 1?
You automatically participate in Round 2. No separate action required if you filled choices.
Q7. What does "Accept and Upward" mean?
It means: you confirm your current seat (pay fee at TFC) AND request the system to upgrade you to a better choice in Upward Movement. If upgrade available → automatic. If not → you keep the current seat. No risk of losing your seat.
Q8. Can an SC student get an OC seat?
Yes. If an SC student's General Rank is high enough to compete in the OC (31%) pool, they will be allotted an OC seat. Their allotment order will show ALLOTTED COMMUNITY: OC. This is a good outcome.
Q9. Are deemed universities like VIT and SRM part of TNEA?
No. VIT, SRM (main campus), Amrita, Saveetha, and other deemed universities have their own admission processes completely separate from TNEA.
Q10. Does the 7.5% fee waiver apply to all colleges?
Yes — to all TNEA-participating colleges (government, aided, and self-financing). The TN Government pays the fees directly to the college.
Q11. My community is BCM — do I compete in the BC pool?
No. BCM has a separate 3.5% pool. BCM candidates compete in the BCM-specific seats.
Q12. What is the maximum TNEA score?
200 marks (Maths 100 + Physics 50 + Chemistry 50).
Q13. Is there a difference between "Cyber Security" branch (CY) and CSE Cyber Security (SC)?
Yes. CY is a standalone "Cyber Security" branch degree. SC is "CSE (Cyber Security)" — a variant of the CSE degree with a Cyber Security specialisation.
Q14. Can I go to any TFC or must I go to my district's TFC?
Any TFC in Tamil Nadu can serve you. You do not need to go to your specific district's TFC.
Q15. What happens if I miss the TFC visit deadline?
Your allotment is cancelled. You cannot recover that specific allotment. You may participate in the next round if it is still ongoing.
Q16. My BC community certificate was issued by Tahsildar. Is it valid for TNEA?
Not for claiming BC reservation. You need an RDO-level certificate. Get it re-issued before registration opens.
Q17. Can I apply for both 7.5% quota and general quota simultaneously?
Yes. All eligible candidates automatically appear in both general and 7.5% rank lists. The system allots from whichever pool benefits you more.
Q18. What is the Government School Rank (GSR)?
A separate merit rank calculated for 7.5% quota-eligible candidates. Used only for allotment from the 7.5% reserved seats.
Q19. Are MBC and DNC the same in TNEA?
For counselling purposes, yes. DNC candidates register under the MBC code and compete in the same 20% pool. There is no separate DNC registration or rank list.
Q20. If I decline Round 1 and continue, can I get the same college in Round 2?
Only if that college still has unfilled seats in Round 2. There is no guarantee. Some popular colleges fill up completely in Round 1.
Q21. What is SCA?
Scheduled Caste Arunthathiyar — a 3% sub-quota within the SC reservation. Specifically for Arunthathiyar community members. Unused SCA seats convert to SC seats after Round 3.
Q22. Can improvement exam marks be used for TNEA?
No. Improvement exam marks are not considered for any TNEA candidate from 2006 onwards (G.O. No. 184 HE (J2) dt. 09.06.2005 + G.O. (st) 143 HE (J2) dt. 06.05.2008). Whether the improvement was through the same board or a different one is irrelevant — TNEA uses only your first-attempt original marks for both eligibility and rank.
Q23. Is there a maximum number of choices allowed?
Up to 100 college-branch combinations can be entered.
Q24. What is the "random number" in my profile and how is it used?
A 10-digit unique number assigned by the TNEA system after the registration deadline closes (TNEA 2026: 05 June 2026). It is visible in your candidate profile on tneaonline.org and cannot be changed. It is the 6th and final tie-breaker — used only when two candidates have identical Maths %, Physics %, Optional-subject %, Total Class-12 %, and date of birth. The candidate with the HIGHER random number gets the higher rank. (This is the 2026 rule — a reversal from earlier informal practice some sites still cite.)
Q25. My college is a minority college. Does this affect my admission?
If you are from the minority community that the college is established for, you may have a slight advantage in the management quota seats. The 50% TNEA quota is open to all communities by merit.
Q26. What branches are available in Tamil Medium?
Three branches: Civil Engineering Tamil Medium (XC), Mechanical Engineering Tamil Medium (XM), and CSE Tamil Medium (XS).
Q27. Is the 5-year integrated M.Tech. program (CJ) filled through TNEA?
Yes, M.Tech. CSE Integrated 5-year (code CJ) is part of TNEA. Admission is based on Class 12 marks, same as B.E.
Q28. What if I opted for "Decline & Upward" and nothing better came in Upward Movement?
You automatically move to the next round of counselling. You are not removed from counselling.
Q29. Is the counselling process the same for 7.5% quota and general counselling?
Yes — same portal, same rounds, same dates. The system automatically applies your GSR for 7.5% seats and your General Rank for open/communal seats.
Q30. Which is more important — General Rank or Community Rank?
Both are used simultaneously by the system. The allotment algorithm tries to give you the best possible seat from whichever pool (OC or community reserved) your rank allows. A strong General Rank can land you an OC seat even if you are MBC or SC.
Q31. What are the document upload size limits?
Per official Registration Instructions: Certificates must be 150 KB – 1 MB each (PDF / JPG / JPEG / PNG). Passport photo and signature must be 20 KB – 50 KB each (JPG / JPEG / PNG). Files outside these ranges are rejected silently — compress or scale before uploading.
Q32. What payee name should I write on the Demand Draft?
"THE SECRETARY, TNEA, CHENNAI – 25" — exact wording. DD payment is allowed only at the TFC counter, not online. Online payments use Credit Card / Debit Card / Net Banking / UPI.
Q33. Can I change my registered email or mobile number later?
No. Email and mobile cannot be changed once you complete registration. Choose carefully — these are your login credentials throughout the entire counselling cycle.
Q34. What is the password rule for tneaonline.org?
Minimum 6 characters, must include at least 1 alphabet, 1 special character from !@#$%^&, and 1 number.
Q35. Where do I check whether my school is eligible for 7.5%?
Look up your school by name / district / block in the official School Block Information PDF (874 pages). The PDF lists every TN school with its school-type classification. Only the 7 government school categories on our 7.5% Government School Quota page qualify.
